It hardly seems fair to even compare them! Don’t get me wrong. I have an entire cd case of dvds – I love them, in fact I have tons of favorites and find it hard to pick one that’s the best (well…..my favorite movie is Shelter…if you’re an LGBTQ fan, I would recommend it, if not, avoid it. That is all.). But books and movies are all too often compared!
It does make sense, of course, that they would be compared, because they both convey stories and one often turns into the other, but they are in two different worlds in my opinion. With one, you use your imagination to fill in any holes and draw pictures inside of your mind. You create the images with the help of an author’s words. A thousand people can picture a thousand different versions of the same thing. More often than with movies, people take away slightly different messages – themes, tropes, meanings. This is why English teachers will forever be employed…because people are all different and books allow some of those differences to shape our understandings of what we’re reading! Books are SO beautiful! Movies, on the other hand, give you those details…fill them in for you. Occasionally, movies do leave you contemplating, but more often there’s sinister music when one character walks in or light colors and good lighting around another. Visual cues give us hints in order to have at least an idea of what we otherwise would have filled in for ourselves. I’m not trying to diss on movies entirely. Not really. Special effects are frequently FANTASTIC and amazing enough that some movies based on books remain must sees. Harry Potter 7 Part 2 came out 2 nights ago and there was no question – I had to see it at midnight and it had to be spectacular. And it met my expectations! Better than the book? No. But then, they really are 2 different beats.
So is every single book better than every single movie based on it? Probably not – some books are crap. And I have no respect for books made BASED on movies. They have no dignity and allow very little imagination since the reader has probably seen the movie. But in general if a book is made from a movie, I’ll take the book.
